Exclusive – Danny Simpson backs ‘top class’ Craig Shakespeare to stay on as Leicester City manager beyond this season

Danny Simpson says there will be no complaints from any of the Leicester players if Craig Shakespeare stays on as manager beyond this season.

Shakespeare, assistant to Claudio Ranieri during last season’s remarkable Premier League title triumph, has impressed since taking the top job in February.

He has had led the Foxes to five wins in seven league games to move the clubclear of the relegation zone, and also masterminded a victory over Sevilla in the Champions League last 16.

After Leicester’s sensational Champions League run was ended by Atletico Madrid on Tuesdaynight – despite another spirited display– Shakespeare admitted he was unsure about his future at the club with his contract expiring in June.

But Simpson is backing the 53-year-old to extend his spell in charge at the King Power Stadium, telling talkSPORT:“Craig isLeicester. He has been there for years, all the lads lovehim, and he has been top class since he took over.

“It is only what we expected when he did take over.It is a shame for him we couldn’t get over that next step [in the Champions League] and get intothe semi-finals.

“But there will be no complaints from the players or anyone if he does get the job.Leicester have got their identity back and people back supporting is.

“We have got to finish the season strongand see what happens.”

Leicester can hold their heads high following their Champions League exit, with just a singlegoal separatingthem fromSpanish giants Atletico Madrid over two legs.

Simpson is gutted the dream run is overand admits it has left him and his teammates desperate to taste more European action.

“Some of us may not play in the Champions League again,” he said.

“It is an incredible feeling to be out there playing against those types of players and the nights like Seville.

“To be in Europe and to go as far we did, we want it again. The hunger is there and we have the fire in our belly.”
